Marine and Offshore

Commercial food waste solutions for marine vessels

At least eight billion tonnes of plastic are leaked into our oceans each year, and in 2050, the world’s waters are predicted to contain more plastic waste than fish – according to research from the Ellen MacArthur Foundation.

But it’s not just plastic that’s contributing to marine pollution, ship-generated food waste is threatening wildlife ecosystems and the marine food chain too.

Luxury yachts, exploration and offshore vessels all produce a significant tonnage of food waste on board, so it’s important that it’s treated and disposed of as sustainably as possible – to help protect our ocean life and ensure there is no biosecurity risk.

With heavy-lift crane ships – and 150-man crews – easily generating up to 12 tonnes of food waste on a typical 12-week offshore project, and space often at a premium, on-board food waste reduction is essential.

Food waste drying and dewatering technology – like our Gobi Dryers and Dehydra Dewaterers – enable crews to reduce the volume and weight of the food waste by up to 80%, and sterilise and convert it into a dried, inert, and odourless powder. This allows vessels to store it for long periods without degradation – saving cold storage space, improving their carbon footprint, and helping them to remain compliant under the MARPOL regulations when it comes to food waste disposal and discharge.

We’ve worked with many maritime organisations including Fred. Olsen, P&O Ferries, Subsea 7, Nobiskrug, and De Vries Scheepsbouw Makkum, helping them to improve food waste management on board.

Our heavy-duty Gobi Dryer can reduce the volume and weight of commercial food wastes by up to 90%.
