It’s exciting to announce that one of the UK’s longest established oilfield supply firm’s has chosen our food waste drying technology for an environmental innovation contract.
Specialising in the installation of below-surface infrastructure for platforms, exploration, drilling and wind turbines, the offshore project specialist will be able to safely sterilise and dehydrate organic waste onboard its heavy-lift crane ship – using our food waste drying equipment, the G100 Gobi Dryer.
The equipment will be trialled on the vessel before being implemented across the rest of company’s fleet.
Commenting on the benefits of an on-boat solution, our sales manager, Huw Crampton, said: “These kind of ships commonly have 150 people aboard at any one time – meaning space is at a premium – and as they’re often working in one location at sea for lengthy periods, it can be months until they meet up with a platform supply vessel (PSV), to take the wastes for onshore disposal.”
With a full-capacity, large-scale vessel generating up to 12 tonnes of food waste on a typical 12-week offshore project, crews are faced with the task of safely and sustainably dealing with their wastes while out at sea.
“Being able to condense their food waste and store it for long periods without degradation not only saves space but allows the crew to take a more environmentally friendly approach to waste management,” Huw continued.
The investment will also help to aid compliance surrounding the maritime industry’s regulatory challenges when it comes to food waste disposal.
Huw elaborated: “Currently, ships have to be located within specific land boundaries or away from scientific places of interest to compliantly deposit food waste over the side of the vessel – but these territories can be difficult to identify.
“Installing a Gobi Dryer on board is an innovative and eco-friendly way for vessels to improve their carbon footprint in line with the industry’s waste hierarchy.”
The International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL) currently permits three food waste disposal routes – the sea, incineration and to a port reception facility – but our tech provides a greener alternative.
“On-board incinerators generate lots of emissions – and are facing greater restrictions due to their heavy pollution levels – plus offloading the waste in ports also carries greater biosecurity risks if there is contamination,” explained Huw.
“The only other option is to store it in a gray water system, but this method doesn’t ‘trace’ the food waste effectively and can pose a potential biohazard if it is deposited when ships discharge sewage.”
Our heavy-duty Gobi Dryer will reduce the volume and weight of the food wastes by up to 90% – producing a dried, powdered residue which is compact and odourless.
